MAANI: Mal. Meaning and origin unclear

               Var. Mani.

Probably related to Manny, the Spanish variant for Manuel. It is unlikely this name                alone survived as a Hindu name. Mani can be a Brahmin boy. Mani may be a title as in                Manigramam (chief of the merchants). But, usually a title is used along with a                                Christian name. It is highly probable that, the name Mani may be derived from Mani,                  the leader of Manichaeism, an offshoot of Christianity in the third century. Mani                          visited India and preached and converted people into his sect. Some Christians may                    be still using the name.
